Custom Solutions · O-Tether Case Study

Secure travel Internet that just works.

A family on the move wanted one safe network everywhere they went, without another monthly bill. So we built a small appliance that turns their own phones into a secure home network.

No apps. No accounts. No dashboards. No hidden fees.

The problem

Every easy option was a bad one.

On the road, getting online was never the hard part. Their phones had data everywhere they went. The hard part was turning that into a single network the whole family could share, and every obvious fix had a catch.

Public Wi-Fi at parks and hotels is open to anyone. Pairing each device to a phone hotspot meant reconfiguring everything by hand, and the connection kept dropping. A Wi-Fi repeater was slower than the phone itself. And their own router couldn't share a phone's connection at all.

What we built

A Bespoke UTM Appliance

It began as a spare single-board computer the household already owned. The repurposed UTM provides active-threat protection and is comprised of various layers:

  1. L1

    Tether bridge

Detects the phone and brings the tether up on its own. Plug in for Internet. Unplug and it's off.

  2. L2

    Default-deny firewall

Only expected traffic gets through. Everything else is dropped, not trusted.

  3. L3

    Threat intelligence

Known-bad domains and IP addresses are blocked from updated feeds, before anything else looks at the traffic.

  4. L4

    Flow detection

Every connection is classified and watched, so unusual traffic stands out.

  5. L5

    Intrusion prevention

Traffic is checked inline against known attack patterns and dropped when it matches.

  • Signed releases. The box runs only the code we shipped, never an unverified local change.
  • Always protected, or not connected. If protection ever fails, the connection closes with it, so you are never left exposed without knowing.
How it connects

Plug in a phone. Everyone's online.

  1. Phone
    supplies the Internet
  2. O-Tether
    bridges it, securely
  3. Existing Router
    no new hardware
  4. Every device
    same Wi-Fi as home

Plug the phone in and every device is back on the home network. Unplug it, and the tether is off.

Security

What's protecting you.

  • Familiar Wi-Fi

Your devices use the same network name and password they already know. Nothing to change on each phone, tablet, or laptop.

  • Phone Tether Bridge

The phone provides the Internet connection. The router shares it with the rest of the travel network.

  • DNS Filtering

Known ad, tracker, phishing, and malware domains are blocked before your devices ever try to connect.

  • Threat Intelligence

Known malicious IP addresses and networks are blocked using regularly updated threat-intelligence feeds.

  • Intrusion Prevention

Traffic is checked for known attack patterns before it leaves or enters the travel network.

  • Default-Deny Firewall

Only expected traffic is allowed through. Anything unusual is dropped instead of trusted by default.

  • Phone Isolation

The phone shares its connection, and nothing on the travel network can reach back into the phone itself.

  • Router Guest Network

Your router can offer a separate guest Wi-Fi for visitors and borrowed devices. They get the same protected connection, fully walled off from your own devices.

  • No Dashboard Required

No web account, no cloud console. Normal use is just: plug in the phone.

Have a problem you can't find a solution for?

O-Tether was never a product. It was one solution, built for one household. If your problem doesn't fit the usual mold, let's build something that fits yours.
